Georgia Teachers Initiative Grant Winner

At Walnut Grove High School, Ms. Merck’s program seeks to expand access to the school’s growing band program so that every student has the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial means. Supported by a $2,000 Teacher Grant for Innovation, the project will purchase new mallets, mallet instruments, and clarinets to replace aging equipment and meet rising enrollment in both beginning and advanced band classes. By ensuring equitable access to quality instruments, the initiative not only enhances musical proficiency but also cultivates teamwork, discipline, creativity, and perseverance, skills proven to strengthen success in college, careers, and life. This expansion reflects an inclusive, student-centered model where participation in the arts becomes a powerful pathway for developing the collaboration and problem-solving abilities valued in today’s workforce. In blending arts access with long-term skill-building, Walnut Grove’s band program exemplifies innovation that resonates well beyond the classroom.

One of the mottos in our band program is ‘Semper Gumby’ or ‘always flexible’. This flexibility is how we innovate whether it’s dealing with a broken instrument, losing our practice field to another event, or finding ways to increase participation while not settling for less. Our program is growing rapidly with the influx of students who want to be part of something bigger than themselves which is driving the need for us to further innovate in order to provide a quality experience to all band students.
