If you have a passion to connect and invest in kids to help them become successful adults, then please become a teacher. Transitioning from industry to teaching was the best move of my career. I loved working in television, but I also love teaching students to love working in television. We get to do so much creative things . My classroom is truly my own and my students have bought into the program and helped grow it into an amazing place to be.
Make your classroom your own. Be your unique and wonderfully made self. Your students will connect with you better when they can tell that you are you. I tried to teach lessons the way other teachers in my field do it, and I found that the way I do it works for me and for my students. If you try something and it doesn’t work, just be honest with the students and try again tomorrow.
I love the relationships that I get to build with my students. Most of my students will take 3 or 4 classes with me and participate in the clubs that I sponsor. We get to spend a lot of time together and I get to really know them and be a part of their lives. Teaching is a ministry to me and that is why I stay in education.
The school system I teach in is my community. I wouldn’t want to teach any where else. I live, work, and go to church in the same community. That also means I see my students outside the classroom very often so I have to always remember to set a good example. My community is rural but not super rural. I love that we also have students from multiple cultures in my school. The diversity is awesome.
