Joanna Haggerty is originally from Maryland and moved to Georgia in 2023 as a military spouse. She has taught elementary school in many different states and currently serves as a literacy coach, supporting teachers and students through evidence based reading instruction in rural Georgia.

Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose, but it requires heart, dedication, and a commitment to lifelong learning. My advice is to enter the profession with an open mind, a willingness to grow, and a passion for making a difference. Every challenge comes with an opportunity to impact a student’s life in a meaningful way. The relationships you build and the moments you create will make the journey worthwhile.
Build relationships first. Students may not remember every lesson you teach, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Be patient, stay flexible, keep learning, and never underestimate the impact you can have on a child’s life.
I choose to stay in education because I believe every child deserves a teacher who sees their potential and believes in their ability to succeed. I want to be the teacher I needed as a student. Education gives me the opportunity to make a lasting impact, support students and teachers, and continue growing as a lifelong learner. The relationships remind me every day why this work matters.
I chose to teach in a rural school system because I value the strong sense of community and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students, families, and educators. Rural schools provide a unique environment where teachers can truly know their students and make a lasting impact. I appreciate being part of a community that is committed to supporting children and helping them reach their full potential.
