My name is Dr. Burnette, affectionately called Burnie or Doc by my students. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Valdosta State University (VSU), a Masters with the Art of Teaching in Secondary Education from VSU, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from VSU. I hold endorsements in both gifted and online teaching, certifications in teaching AP courses, and firmly believe in continuing education. I feel passionately about education beyond the traditional classroom walls and anytime I can take students to locations to explore learning – I do – I’ve taken kids to over 20 different countries! I’ve been married 16 years, have 2 boys, a dog, and a cat!

Just do it!! Kids are the best and there really is no better investment in the future than investing in children.
Find someone in your building who you admire and study them, how they interact with others and students, the lessons they build, the way they innovate, and the way they navigate spaces. Use models of others to build your own version of what it means to be a teacher. Find people who are genuine, uplifting, and encouraging and sit in their presence! And hang in there!!! It does get easier!
I love my job! I love kids and their passion for the world. I believe in the mission of education and what education can do for an individual. I also believe we need stable and healthy educators to model what it means to be an active citizen in society, politics, family, and community. And we have an amazing retirement program for Georgia teachers!!
I teach in the area around mine and my husband’s families! After we had children, we had heavy incentive to stay in this area so our children would have a strong relationship with their grandparents. We also love the land, grass, and deep community relationships that comes with rural settings!
