A Teach in the Peach Ambassador

Leigha Burnham is an award-winning Georgia educator with 25 years of experience. A Georgia Teacher of the Year Top Ten Finalist, Don Cargill STEM Scholar, GLMA’s Intellectual Freedom Award winner, and a multiple Teacher of the Year honoree, she champions literacy, STEM, and innovative learning through dynamic school library leadership.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone considering teaching?

If someone is considering a career in teaching, my advice would be to enter the profession with both passion and purpose. Teaching offers an opportunity to help students discover the power of their own voice and realize that their ideas, stories, and perspectives matter. By championing literacy and helping students connect their stories to those in books, I have found my passion and purpose and inspired my students to find theirs.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to new teachers?

My advice to new teachers is to find your people. Building relationships with colleagues who understand your role provides encouragement, fresh ideas, and a trusted support system. As a teacher-librarian, connecting with others who share my work has been one of the most valuable parts of my professional growth.

Why do you choose to stay in education?

I have spent 25 years in education because of the deep sense of purpose I have found in my work. That purpose has only grown stronger because of the incredible community of educators around me. The encouragement, collaboration, and shared purpose I have found among Georgia educators continues to inspire me, strengthen my practice, and remind me that we make a greater impact together.

Why did you choose to teach in an (urban, rural, small, large, etc.) school system?

I chose to teach in a rural school because I value the close-knit community and the strong relationships that make every student, family, and educator feel connected. Being part of that supportive community has enriched both my work and my students’ experiences.

Is there any other information you would like to share?

I am now currently serving as the District 7 Director on the PAGE Board. I am also interested in any opportunities to represent TITP at my alma maters: Berry College and University of West Georgia
