Originally from Michigan, Ike Thompson began teaching in Georgia in 2005. He currently teachers English and coaches the fishing team for Veterans High School. In 2019 he was a Top 10 finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year in 2019. Ike is dedicated to developing future educators, championing innovative pathways into teaching.

I stay in education because every day offers the chance to make a lasting difference. Watching students grow in confidence, discover their potential, and achieve goals they once thought impossible is incredibly rewarding. Their success—and the relationships we build—continues to inspire me every year.
I moved here 22 years ago and have stayed in the same community ever since because it offers the best of both worlds—a close-knit community with the resources and opportunities of a high-performing school system. Strong support, exceptional students, and a culture of excellence make it an ideal place to build meaningful relationships and help students succeed. I am an avid outdoorsmen and living in Middle Georgia means not only do I have access to my hobbies here at home, but I’m only a couple hours away from being in the mountains, from a big city, or a beach on the coast.
After growing up in Michigan, I found a professional home in Georgia. The support, leadership opportunities, and strong sense of community have made it the ideal place to build a career and make a lasting difference for students. It’s here I have met my wife and educators that have forever changed the trajectory of my life.
