Georgia Teachers Initiative Grant Winner

Aiyesha Coley Davis of Fort Valley Middle School of Peach County Schools will use $2,500 to implement “The Valley’s Lit Lab: A Real-World Literacy HUB.” This transformative initiative reinvents literacy instruction through project-based experiences like podcasting, digital storytelling, and community journalism, placing student voice at the heart of learning. Designed for a high-need middle school population, the Lit Lab blends culturally responsive content with real-world communication skills to foster joy, identity, and engagement in reading and writing. Funding will support the creation of a flexible literacy space with diverse libraries, podcasting equipment, publishing tools, and professional development for teachers. Additional resources will fund student publishing platforms, showcase events, and family literacy nights. With strong community partnerships, this scalable program offers a powerful, equity-driven model that bridges classroom learning with authentic audiences and measurable literacy growth.

Innovation in my classroom means reimagining literacy as a dynamic, student-centered experience. Instead of relying solely on traditional texts and worksheets, students engage with real-world reading and writing through podcasts, digital storytelling, and collaborative publishing. Innovation allows students to see themselves as creators, not just consumers, of content. It empowers them to connect literacy with their lives, cultures, and future careers. By integrating technology, authentic audience, and choice, innovation transforms passive learning into active exploration—driving deeper engagement, improved outcomes, and a lasting love for literacy. Innovation gives my students the opportunity to create an experience that they will be proud of. It teaches students thay literacy can be fun, eventful, and a total experience.
