Georgia Teachers Initiative Grant Winner

Ms. Orr of Morgan County Elementary School of Morgan County School System will use the Teacher Grant for Innovation for her project “A Space for All Mathematicians.” This initiative will transform her fourth-grade gifted math classroom into a flexible, welcoming environment designed to support underrepresented students in gifted education, including economically disadvantaged students and those with trauma. By incorporating flexible seating and trauma-informed practices, the project fosters a sense of belonging and inclusivity in a subject area that often feels inaccessible. Funding will be used to create a space that encourages collaboration, cultural responsiveness, and confidence in mathematics. The project offers a model for equitable, student-centered learning that can be adapted across classrooms and districts.

Innovation is critical to gifted education. The students served in gifted programs crave innovative approaches to learning and thrive in environments where their own creativity can be cultivated, supported, and challenged. I aim to bring authentic math challenges into my classroom so that my students understand its value and purpose within and beyond the walls of our school.
