Teach in the Peach is the Georgia Department of Education’s official teacher recruitment website.
In 2015, under the direction of Georgia’s State School Superintendent Richard Woods, the Georgia Department of Education released a survey completed by over 53,000 teachers that pinpointed a problem: Teacher Burnout. Further compounded by a global pandemic, the Georgia Department of Education began to take action to improve working conditions for educators. In 2022, Superintendent Woods announced the release of Georgia’s Teacher Burnout Report. This task force, chaired by 2022 Georgia Teacher of the Year Cherie Goldman, released a 35-page report analyzing the causes of teacher burnout following a global pandemic and recommended key policy actions.
The Report Recommended Five Areas for Improvement:
- Reducing High-Stakes Assessment
- Preserving and Protecting Educator Time
- Minimizing Pressures and Unrealistic Expectations
- Increasing Teacher Voice and Professional Growth
- Prioritizing Staff Mental Health and Wellness
Since that time, the state of Georgia has invested heavily in Georgia’s teachers, taking action on the items outlined in the Teacher Burnout Report. The Teach in the Peach website serves as a teacher recruitment tool and a platform to highlight the vision of elevating and celebrating all of Georgia’s educators.
Recent Accomplishments Include:
The Teach in the Peach website is a resource made by teachers for future teachers, with over 250 future and current educators involved in creating the site. We hope this resource will encourage communities to continue investing in teachers while raising awareness of the benefits of teaching in Georgia.
- SB 367 (2020) reduces the number of high-stakes assessments, cuts the number of high school tests in half, and removes the 5th-grade Social Studies exam to reduce the burden placed on teachers and students.
- HB 340 (2023) protects teacher time by guaranteeing a duty-free planning period for grades 6-12.
- SB 88 (2021) allows the Georgia Teacher of the Year to serve as Advisor Ex-Officio to the State Board of Education, streamlining the communication between the State Board of Education and Georgia’s classrooms and teachers.
- Under the leadership of Governor Kemp, teacher pay was raised by $10,000.
